Q: What is “Team Bonding”?
A lot people ask me this question. Team bonding certainly seems to be more than sitting together at a ballgame, enjoying adult drinks (not that there’s anything wrong with that, as they might say on Seinfeld).
To me, team bonding means a fun, low-stakes, structured activity with a beginning, middle and end where you:
- Learn about (and laugh) about each other’s strengths, weaknesses, and personality differences.
- Create a shared story that involves striving and overcoming –usually one step beyond everyone’s comfort zone.
- Express appreciation for each other in the form of positive feedback
- Practice empathy and support
When people set goals that are just one step beyond their comfort line, success is exhilarating. It’s bonding. And most importantly, it creates an experience that people can draw upon back in the work place. You’ve done it before, you can do it again! You trust each other and the process!
