Originally called Quarropas (or “White Marshes”) by the Weckquaeskeck tribe of the Mohican nation, White Plains, NY is situated only 25 miles north of Manhattan, making it a key gateway to upstate New York and New England. The first colonists bought the land on which White Plains now stands from the Mohicans in 1683; later its county courthouse would be the location of the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in New York State, on July 11, 1776. George Washington established his headquarters here, and the Battle of White Plains marked a key turning point in the struggle for independence. The town today offers a combination of comfortable suburban living and bustling commercial and retail activity. During your treasure hunt in the slick White Plains downtown area, expect to encounter life-size statues; gurgling fountains; a church with emotional faces; a wall of celebrity photos, and much, much more.
