Welcoming guests since November of 2005, the dazzling Georgia Aquarium has been a hit from the start, drawing its millionth guest less than 100 days after opening. The brainchild of Bernard Marcus, who visited over 56 similar structures before coming up with a suitable design, the Georgia Aquarium is billed as the “world’s largest aquarium” with more than 8 million gallons of marine and fresh water and more than 100,000 animals of 500 different species. Although many visitors come merely to gape at the four ethereal Beluga whales and the majestic whales sharks, there is so much more to see here: otters and sea lions, piranhas and penguins, swordfish and sea stars. Along with its counterpart in Monterey Bay, this may just be “the” aquarium to visit in the world. During your treasure hunt at the Georgia Aquarium, expect to feel like a scuba diver as you journey through a 100-foot-long underwater tunnel; explore a wall of technicolor fish in the Tropical Diver area; gape and fairy-tale images of the Leafy Sea Dragons, and much, much more.
