Before the 13th century, Paris’ Marais district was exactly what its French name implied: a “marsh” or “swamp”. By the early 17th century, however, Henri IV had turned the area into the city’s most fashionable residential district, with elegant mansions and subtle “pavillons”. Today, this 4e arrondissement neighborhood is one of the few remaining areas to retain its pre-Revolution architecture. Here you’ll find the grand Place Des Vosges, the Picasso Museum, Victor Hugo’s house and the National Archives, along with the Pletzl, home of Paris’ long-established Jewish community. During your treasure hunt in the Marais, expect to see a hidden labyrinth; a statue of a knotted pistol; a poster of a bygone patisserie; an errant sundial; and a mural of Don Quixote. In the City of Light, perhaps no neighborhood has more treasures than the Marais.
