Once considered the heart of the city, Rome’s Capitoline Hill is the site of Rome’s holiest ancient temples: the Temple to Jupiter and the Capitoline Triad (Jupiter, Juno, and their daughter Minerva). Here, too, Brutus and his fellow assassins locked themselves inside the Temple of Jupiter after murdering Julius Caesar. When the Celtic Gauls raided Rome in 390 BC, the Capitoline Hill (or Campidoglio) was the one section of the city to evade capture by the barbarians. Today, the Capitoline Hill, with its unbeatable views of the Forum and Colisseum, hosts the remarkable Capitoline Museum, one of the world’s premier museums for experiencing Roman artifacts. During your treasure hunt at the Capitoline, expect to encounter the only equestrian statue to survive from ancient Rome; an Etruscan she-wolf; the Dying Gaul; and much, much more.
