Chartered and opened in 1824 “for the promotion of the mechanic arts,” the Franklin Institute is one of the best (and grandest) science museums in the country. In part a memorial to Benjamin Franklin, the museum in many ways perpetuates Franklin’s legacy of scientific inquiry (as well as showcases many of his personal effects). Here you’ll find the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial, featuring a 20-foot-high statue sculpted by James Earle Fraser, sitting within its own rotunda; The Tuttleman IMAX Theater; The Fels Planetarium; a large-scale walk-through human heart; the Baldwin 60000 steam locomotive; and the Wright Brothers Aeronautical Engineering Collection. During your treasure hunt in the Franklin Institute, expect to encounter: the mural of space; an exhibit for building a plane; operatic life cycles; a Morse Code office, and much more.
